Managing Unsubscribes and Compliance
How Unsubscribes Work
When a contact clicks the unsubscribe link in any email, MisarMail immediately changes their status to Unsubscribed. They will not receive any future campaigns or automation emails from your account. The process is instant and requires no manual action from you.
Unsubscribe Link Requirement
Every marketing email sent through MisarMail automatically includes an unsubscribe link in the footer. This is required by CAN-SPAM (US), GDPR (EU/UK), and CASL (Canada). You cannot disable or remove the unsubscribe link from marketing emails.
One-Click Unsubscribe (List-Unsubscribe Header)
MisarMail automatically adds the List-Unsubscribe and List-Unsubscribe-Post headers to all bulk emails. These headers enable one-click unsubscribe directly from Gmail and Outlook without requiring the recipient to open the email. This is required by Google and Yahoo for bulk senders sending more than 5,000 emails/day to Gmail addresses.
Preference Centers
Instead of a binary subscribe/unsubscribe, offer subscribers more granular control:
- Go to Settings → Preference Center
- Enable the preference center and configure the options available to subscribers
- Subscribers clicking "Manage Preferences" in your footer will land on this page instead of immediately unsubscribing
Preference centers reduce unsubscribe rates by 20–40% by letting subscribers reduce frequency or change content types instead of opting out entirely.
GDPR Data Requests
Under GDPR, subscribers have the right to access or delete all personal data you hold about them.
Data Access Request
- Go to Contacts and search for the contact
- Click the contact to open their profile
- Click Export Contact Data to generate a complete JSON export of all data
- Send this export to the requester within 30 days
Data Deletion Request (Right to Be Forgotten)
- Go to Contacts and find the contact
- Click Delete Contact
- Confirm deletion — this permanently removes all contact data
- Add the email address to your suppression list to prevent re-addition
Important: Deletion removes all data including interaction history. This action cannot be undone.
Re-subscribing a Contact
An unsubscribed contact can re-subscribe only by submitting a new opt-in form themselves. You cannot manually re-subscribe contacts who have opted out — this is a legal requirement under GDPR and CAN-SPAM.
